Why table mats matter more than they seem

• They frame the plate. Food photographs better on a defined surface, and guests photograph food constantly.
• They protect the table. Hot plates, condensation rings and cutlery scratches wear table tops out faster than most owners expect.
• They speed up resets. On wipe-clean mats, a reset is a wipe; on bare wood it is a scrub.
• They carry the brand. A logo, a line or a pattern at every place setting, seen for the entire meal.

Material by material

Fabric mats: denim, cotton and gingham

Fabric mats bring warmth and texture, and they photograph beautifully. Details that make fabric mats work in service: a stitched cutlery pocket, a hemmed or bound edge that does not fray, and a mid-weight fabric that lies flat without curling.

Checks and gingham

Leatherette mats

Leatherette mats wipe clean between covers, so they suit fast-turning bars and restaurants that want a smart, dark table without laundry. They pair naturally with leatherette menu covers and bill folders. Debossed logos last longest.

MDF and cork-backed mats

Rigid mats with a printed, sealed surface are practical for high-volume cafes and outdoor seating. They take full-colour artwork, so the mat can carry an illustration, a map of your sourcing, or a pattern from your interiors. Paper mats

Paper placemats are an underrated marketing tool. A QSR or diner can print its menu, a brand story, a QR code for delivery orders, or a colouring page for children, and change the design for every season or promotion. We print them alongside packaging and other paper items.

Table runners: when and how to use them

A runner is a long, narrow strip of fabric along the centre or across the width of a table. It adds colour and texture without the maintenance of a full tablecloth. Runners work best on:

• Feature and communal tables that anchor the room.
• Private dining and banquets, where a runner in the brand colour turns a plain table into an event.
• Festive and seasonal setups, such as Diwali, Christmas or a wedding season, where runners can be swapped cheaply.

Sizes that work

Always measure your own tables and settings. Two-tops in particular often cannot fit two full-size mats without overlap.

Branding: subtle usually wins

A placemat is seen for an entire meal, so restraint pays off. A small embroidered or printed logo in one corner, or a line of text along one edge, feels confident. Common mistakes

• Too few fabric sets. One set per table means bare tables on laundry day. Plan for three.
• Mats that do not fit the table. Measure your two-tops: many cannot take two full-size mats.
• Light colours with Indian food. Turmeric and tomato stain pale fabric permanently. Choose darker or patterned fabrics, or wipe-clean materials.
• Unhemmed edges. Raw or poorly finished edges fray within weeks of commercial washing.
• Mats that fight the plates. A busy pattern under a colourful dish makes both look worse. If your plating is colourful, keep the mat simple.
