Napkins are the most-touched textile in a restaurant and the one most often bought as a commodity. That is a missed opportunity: a napkin is a branded object that sits in the guest's lap for the entire meal.

Fabric

  • 100% cotton is the most absorbent and feels best, and it is what fine-dine expects. It creases, which is part of the appeal, and it needs pressing.
  • Poly-cotton holds colour, resists staining and needs far less pressing. The pragmatic choice for casual and mid-market dining with in-house laundry.
  • Linen-look blends give the texture of linen with better crease recovery, and photograph beautifully.
  • Denim and canvas for casual and industrial-leaning brands. Hard-wearing, distinctive, and effectively stain-proof in dark washes.

Weight matters: below about 180 GSM a napkin feels thin and drapes poorly. Two hundred to two hundred and forty GSM is the comfortable range.

Size by service style

  • Cocktail and bar: 30 to 35 cm.
  • Casual and cafe: 40 to 45 cm.
  • Standard dining: 45 to 50 cm.
  • Fine-dine: 50 to 55 cm, which is what allows an impressive fold and a proper lap drape.

Branding that survives

Embroidery, always. Commercial laundry runs hot with strong detergent and often with bleach, and printed logos on napkins crack within months. A small embroidered monogram in one corner, in a single thread colour, is the classic and the most durable. Gold or metallic thread on a deep base, which we have made for several restaurants, photographs particularly well.

The napkin is in the guest's hands for ninety minutes. It is worth more than eight rupees of thought.

Colour

White signals fine-dine and demands a laundry contract that can keep it white; grey, tired napkins do more damage than coloured ones ever would. If you cannot support white, choose a deep saturated colour: maroon, ink navy, forest green, oxblood, charcoal. These hide sauce, wine and lipstick and hold their appearance for years.

Quantities and rotation

Plan three to four napkins per cover per service day, which sounds excessive until you account for the laundry cycle, spoilage and the ones that leave in bags. Order a spares tranche in the first batch so the dye lot matches.

The rest of the table

Napkins work hardest when they belong to a set: table mats, runners and cutlery wraps in the same palette, and a matching laundry bag so the linen cycle stays organised. Gingham cutlery wraps and printed tea towels are popular alternatives for casual brands.

Good to know

Questions restaurateurs ask us about this

Should napkins be embroidered or printed?

Embroidered, for anything going through commercial laundry. Prints on napkins crack and fade quickly under high-temperature washing. A small embroidered corner monogram is the standard and it survives years.

What colour napkins hide stains best?

Deep, saturated colours: maroon, ink navy, forest green, charcoal and oxblood. White napkins look best and demand a proper laundry contract; if you cannot commit to that, do not choose white.
