Dressing an International Ramen Brand in Delhi: Uniforms for Mensho Tokyo
When an international F&B brand opens in India, the uniform is one of the first places the brand standard meets local reality. Importing garments is slow and expensive, and reorders become a quarterly headache. Producing locally to the same standard is the better answer, and it is what we did for Mensho Tokyo.
The brief: match, do not reinterpret
This is not a design project. When a brand has an established uniform, the job is to reproduce it accurately: the same fabric weight and hand-feel, the same colour, the same construction, the same logo placement to the millimetre. Creative input is neither asked for nor helpful.
How the matching process works
- Reference garment or spec sheet. A physical sample is best. We take it apart on paper: composition, GSM, weave, seam type, stitch density, trims.
- Fabric sourcing. We identify Indian mill equivalents and send swatches for approval, usually two or three candidates per fabric.
- Colour matching. Against Pantone references and against the physical garment under controlled light. This is where a second round is most often needed.
- Pre-production sample. One complete garment, made exactly as the bulk run will be made, for sign-off.
- Bulk production with in-line quality checks.
What we produced
Chef uniforms for the ramen kitchen, service uniforms for the floor team, a manager layer, and sweatshirts for the winter months, which a Tokyo specification does not always anticipate for a Delhi January. That last item is a good illustration of where local production adds value: the brand standard covered the core uniform, and the Indian outlet needed a winter layer that still looked like the brand.
Producing locally does not mean compromising the standard. It means the standard can be reordered in three weeks instead of three months.
The reorder advantage
The real benefit shows up six months in. New hires need uniforms, garments wear out, and a second outlet opens. With local production, a top-up batch takes weeks rather than a shipment cycle, arrives without customs, and matches because we hold the patterns, fabric codes and dye lot references on file.
